My newest carving, in "Glacier Ice" Corian, with three tiny hand cut cabochons in "Jade" Avonite.

The laces to wear it with are hand cut from a soft white deerhide, and have small bone beads on each end.

This was commissioned as a Talisman, and needed to be perfectly sized to fit in a closed hand, so it's about 2 1/2" long. It's carved on both sides, but only has the stones on the front.

What you can't see here is that this material is slightly translucent, so it sorta glows when you hold it up to a strong light. This material is also kinda hard to photograph, and washes totally out in the type of lighting I normally prefer.
It's much nicer in person than photos can capture, and feels wonderful in the hand. The little cabochons also look darker and richer in person. The sun in this pic kinda washed out their color a little.

Here's a pic with the sun behind it to show the translucence:

And here are a couple closeups of the front and back:

Here's a view under artificial lighting, to better show the detail and the color of the green Avonite cabochons:

This is exquisite. It looks both ancient and futuristic at the same time. Exceptional use of materials!

Thanks!
Corian (and the other "solid surface" products like the related Avonite I used for the green bits) is a lot of fun to work with. Makes good knife handles too. There are a TON of colors, and if you have a place locally that installs countertops, they'll probably let you look in their dumpsters for scrap chunks if you ask nicely. If you want to try specific colors, Corian sells samples off their website for cheap.

You've made great use of it with this piece :) Thanks for the info and suggestion. That's a great idea you have about visiting some countertop installer's shop for scraps! Hmm....

Just be sure to ask first before digging for scraps. It makes it so they won't call the cops on you.
This piece was actually one of the purchased pieces, since I haven't scored any "Glacier Ice" in the scraps runs.

Good call. I'll be certain to get clearance before I rummage:)

Is this "Glacier Ice" stuff work like stone? Glass? Is it cold or does it feel hold room temp kind of like a plastic? Beautiful either way.

"Glacier Ice" is a specific color of Corian. As corian is essentially a very dense polymer plastic of a sort, it's a bit like working with polyester pearl if you've played with that, but firmer and less "mushy" to buff when polishing it, and crisper to sand, more like acrylic. It doesn't have acrylic's melting problem unless you get it really hot, though it CAN be heat formed in an oven over a form if you are VERY careful and do it very slowly. You also don't have to wet sand it to get all the scratches, just work up through your grits like you would with a really fine grained hard ebony. It's about the weight of a dense wood like rock maple or hard walnut, maybe as heavy as lignum, and it starts out cold like stone but warms rapidly in the hand. It also easily takes and holds a high gloss polish, but it does scratch if abused, though it is harder to scratch than plastic or acrylic. The Glacier Ice color is slightly translucent, as you can see in the extra images I put in the artist comments, and also more expensive, so it's harder to find in scraps.

Wow, what a nice material. It sounds like it's pretty forgiving to work with and it really comes out beautifully. It totally looks like stone or glass but it sounds like it's a lot more like wood to work with, awesome. Thanks for the info on Corian!

I hope you're well!
