A functional gift for my fantastic brother-in-law, who's a potter.

Carved from bone white Corian.
(yes, the countertop material)
The carvings have been painted with Testor's black paint. Finished to satin, not gloss, to make it easy to keep hold of it when wet.

The sheath is 9/10 oz. English tanned cowhide, pyrographed, hand sewn and lightly colored with coffee. It has a belt loop on the back.

Yes, it's actually a ceramics tool.

This is not for sale, obviously. It's in my bro's possession, and hopefully being enjoyed.

But you can commission clay tools from me for yourself.

It is better to burn the candle at both ends, and in the middle, too, than to put it away in the closet and let the mice eat it! ~ Henry Van Dyke
 Not sure. He didn't complain, but I haven't seen him in person recently. Mom (Carol) took it up to him. He did say that he was planning on using it, so I guess he didn't hate it.

I love it. I have used it many times. I am looking forward to taking it to John C. Campbell folk School at the end of June.
Yay!
Would you mind if I sent some of my business cards up with Mom for you to take with you? I could use any commissions they might generate.

(Oh, and how's the paint holding up? It's the only thing "experimental" about the design.)

So far the paint is holding up great. I would be glad to take some of your business cards with me. Send them on up.
Ok, will do as soon as Mom and Dad get back in town.

Glad to hear that it's holding up well.
Any ideas for improving the size or shape? I just used a cheap wood one that I had as a pattern....
Or ideas for other types of clay shaping tools?

... *is gap jawed and stunned for good critique* HOLY COW. This is so freaking cool!!!!!! I thought that I recognized the shape and then I clicked on the link and was completely floored. I like working with the flexible ribs more but this is just amazing to look at. Lovely job on this.
I will give that one some thought. I have ribs that are larger than that. Some time if you are ever up here we will go to Highwater Clays so you can take a look at what they have available.
